The Tunnel

Picture 1: A map showing the situation of Sarajevo which was surrounded by the Serbian forces. Via this map, it can be understood better why the tunnel so important actually because it was built between two hills. The place of th tunnel is located on the north-east part where there is a small opennes among the Serbian forces.

Picture 2: A view from the part of the tunnel.

Picture 3: Her name is Sida and she is around 85. She is famous because some parts of the tunnel was built under her house. And also during the war time, she was helping the soldiers who had been used the tunnel.

Today, we visited the Tunnel which is located close to the airport and not so far from my dormitory. The Tunnel is important because during the war time the transportation (in terms of food, soldier, people or even the animals) between the airport and the city could be kept via this tunnel despite the Serbian forces. It was built in 1993 and it took 4 months to finish it. According to the documentary that we watched, it is 800 m long 1.60 high. Today the area where this tunnel is located became like a museum but they do not show the whole parts of the tunnel. We could just walked inside a small part even was hard to be able to walk there. Then we watched a documentary about the situation of Sarajevo during the war-time, how the tunnel was built and how it was used. There are also some pictures from the war-time together with the list of all the sahids (at least the ones who are known). Especially the documentary was so striking. I did not see any direct videos from the war-time which are taken inside the Sarajevo. The fire sent by the snipers from the hills to the inside of the city, to the apartments, to the streets, to the people... And I easily noticed that even the situation that they are inside today is really good when it is compared what they have experienced. I saw from this documentary that so many high buildings got fired from the upper parts and people was trying to go down even from the high floors via the balcons! And I thought I was looking an apartment just in this morning without knowing anything what happened or experienced inside all these apartments. Striking...
