Bayram Serif Mubarek Olsun!

After 1 month fasting period, now, it is time to celebrate it. My eids (bayramlar) have been experiencing different paths than my childhood times since long time. This eid will be a bit different also. I am in Sarajevo with my husband. We did not do something so special like baklava or something like that but I tried to make our home more beautiful than usual. (You can see our sofa below with new pillow covers on it, which I liked so much). Instead of relatives and friends we will have eid gathering in univeristy with other teachers.

You can wonder what this package is about. I got a big letter for eid (actually not for eid but it became like that). I ordered books from 'Kitap Yurdu' first time and I was quite wonderous when I could get it, if I could get it at all etc. etc. Yees, I got it just before the eid. I was so happy to get it with 6 books inside and 26 stamps on it :)

Hani Barış Manço söylerdi ya "Bugün bayram, erken kalkın çocuklar... giyelim en güzel elbiselerimizi..." O çocukluk heyecanları geride kaldı belki ve belki biz yarın erken kalkamayacağız ve de bayramlık cicilerimiz yok artık ama kalkıp şöyle güzel bir kahvaltı sofrası hazırlayıp birbirimizin bayramını tebrik edeceğiz inşallah. Tabi, yaşı benden küçük olan eşimin el öpme töreni de yeni bir tat bayramlarımda :)

A Nice Documentary About Sarajevo

I saw this program called 'Veterans' on Aljazeera yesterday. It is about the siege of Sarajevo and the life after it. I wanted to share with you. The documentary has two parts by the way.

Another autumn in my life... I am happy to see another one with all these colorful leaves lying on the streets under the trees, a bit chilly weather and melancholy. I do not know why but I can get peace and comfort and happiness in this nice season easier than as I get in the other ones.

Mutluluk ya da huzur denen şeyin anlık bir şey olduğunu düşünmüşümdür hep. Hem de illa öyle büyük büyük anların içinde hissedilen değil ama birden öyle işte geliveren ufak şeylerden... Sonbaharda çok hissediyorum bunu. Akşam kanepede uzanırken hafifçe üşüyen bedenime bir battaniye atarken ya da içimi ısıtsın diye hazırladığım kahvenin kokusunu içime çekerken ya da balkonda öylece durup etrafı seyrederken yüzüme hafifçe değip geçen rüzgar ile öyle bir anda huzurlu hissediveriyorum. Gelecek ve geçmiş yok oluveriyor hafızamdan, öylece bir an sadece ben ve şimdi kalıveriyoruz huzurla, mutlulukla.

Expansion

Maybe you remember, a while ago I wrote a book comment on my blog. The book called Improbable... I have quoted a part from the book where Pascal's decision about being religious or not being religious is done by a probabilistic method called expected value. Honestly, I did not know that this expected value analysis which is so common for statistics and probability is not enough to explain some real world applications. But actually I thought that if it was so obvious, not only Pascal but so many people could have made similar decision. Now I know why they can not do and I figured it about by just a coincidental reading.

Kahneman and Tversky who got Nobel prize in economics found out the violations of the expected value theory.
1) Individuals are often observed overweighting outcomes considered certain relative to those which are probable. It means that weighting the probabilities is not due to objectivity but rather due to their sense of likelihood. It was found out that people have hard times to realize the weights of the events which are almost certain and almost impossible. For them, they either certain or impossible. On the other hand, people overweight the low probability events and underweight the medium and high probability ones.
2) While individuals exhibit risk averse behavior over potential gains, they show risk seeking behavior over potential losses.
3) The disutility of a loss is larger in absolute terms than the utility of a gain of equal magnitude. Which means that loss is affecting the behavior more than gain even though they have the same absolute values. Being loss averse...
4) When faced with a pair of prospects, subjects seem to decompose them into their common and different components, and base their choice on the components that are different, thus “isolating” the common components as irrelevant for decision.
5) Excessive discounting of the distant future relative to the near future. Myopia...

All in all, it means that people have 'bounded rationality' in the sense of violating the axioms of expected utility which causes them not being able to find efficient solutions for decisions.

Edeb Ya Hu!

Öyle kelimeler var ki, harf öbekleri olmaktan çıktı, gündelik hayatımızın akışını şekillendirmeye başladı. "Hoyrat" bunlardan biri. Hoyratız birbirimize karşı. Ve sağımız, solumuz, önümüz, arkamız.... hoyrat. Yolda yürürken birbirimize bakışımız, evlerimizin çatıları altında birbirimizden söz edişimiz; konuşmalarımız, dedikodularımız, ithamlarımız, önyargılarımız, zanlarımız, yaftalamalarımız, dışlamalarımız....hep ama hep hoyrat. O kadar çok hırpalıyoruz ki birbirimizi, öylesine hırçın bir iklimdeyiz ki.... Halbuki bu arada uzaktan bir yerden sesleniyor eski mi eski bir öğreti. Tembihliyor usulca.

Belki de bu yüzden seviyorum ufak şehirlerde olmayı bazen. Mesela okula giderken yürüyorum sadece. Yani otobüse bin-in derken bir sürü olası hoyratlıktan sakınıyorum. Dışarı hem adım atışımda hayatıma bir defa dahi girmiş olsalar da üzerime hakları binen insan sayısı da otomatikten azalıyor. Belki bir kaçış. Olsun! Rabbim her alanda herkese herşeye dair hoyratlıktan korusun!
